Unretired Quarterbacks, We Love 'em

So this isn't a huge shocker. Brett Favre is thinking about playing football next year. As reported by ESPN, Favre contacted the Packers about possibly joining the team at training camp. I've been waiting for this announcement since Favre made his teary-eyed farewell. The timing is interesting though. The Pack is set to go with Aaron Rodgers taking the snaps and Favre coming back would put the Pack in an awkward position. Let's just say the Packers decide to stick with Rodgers and release Favre which is probably what they'll do if they're really trying to usher in a new era. Madness will ensue... teams will be scrambling to try and sign him. His agent better have two Blackberries, an iphone, and some damn dexterous fingers for all the text messages he's about to send.

I can think of a few teams where Favre would be a great fit. He'd be perfect backing up the constantly injured McNabb in Philly. Parcells (who I hope doesn't follow through with this) loves veteran quarterbacks. He brought Vinny freakin Testeverde out of retirement. You don't think Favre fits that guy's bill? The Tuna could turn the Dolphins around in record time with a quarterback like him. While we're in the AFC East, why not the Jets? Should Mangini be salivating at the thought of Favre wearing a green and white jersey?

As I started to type the words, "No Coach, don't do it, " I remembered that Justin McCareins is no longer a Jet. I also remembered that our offensive line received a serious upgrade in the off season. Both Coles and Cotchery have great hands and toughness. No McCareins means fewer dropped balls even if they are launched out of a rocket-arm. If our line can protect a quarterback, why not him? We have no legitimate quarterback. It's not like the Jets are married to Kellen Clemens - many feel that Mangini might even go back to Chad Pennington. The only thing clear about the Jets' quarterback position is that it's still a work in progress. I don't see how having a proven leader could do anything but help. It's also a great excuse to unload either Pennington or Clemens.

Mangini wouldn't have to bring Favre in as the starter but I'd bet a large sum of money that he would beat out both Chad and Kellen in training camp. Handedly.

The Jet fan in me is hurt by my own words but I can't deny the truth: Favre is definitely a leader on the field in ways that Pennington or Clemens never could be. He's also got a better, more accurate arm.

I realize that the chances of the Jets getting a newly unretired Brett Favre are slim to none and this is nothing more than a long winded daydream by an emotionally scarred Jets fan. Last season was horrible... what was a joke ten minutes ago has blossomed into superbowl aspirations that hinge on a retired quarterback playing in the most unlikely situation. Didn't we try to draft this guy back in the day?

Yes, it's come to this.
